More day trip options. We were set to go ride bikes in Blois for the day, but can't get an early train. So now thinking of Fountainebleau, where we could also ride bikes and see a little town, and perhaps Vaux Le Vicomte. We are going in June so there would be a shuttle in Melun. Thoughts?
From where would you be starting?
We'd be starting from Paris. Upon more recon, now we are thinking we'll do Fountainebleau and then rent bikes and ride to Barbizon and back instead.
Fountainebleau is a great place to visit, especially if you are into French history. The chateau is amazing, both inside and out, has such a fascinating past, and is not crowded like Versailles. Another great place to visit in the area is Moret Sur Loing, a charming little medieval town, complete with gate towers situated along a very picturesque river. Lots of folks bike between Fontainbleau and Moret. If interested, google Moret Sur Loing and anyportinastorm. you will get some great reports and pics from different bloggers.
Thanks for the suggestion! I will look into that as well.
You will very much enjoy Fontainbleau. As previous poster less crowded than Versailles. With that being said Fontainbleau is an amazing palace with a rich history. Our experience (yours may very) was there was less English spoken there by staff and locals. Nice little town too.
