For Those Interested in Flight Price Data

Some background:

My original intent was to fly into Toulouse or Bordeaux and back from Lyon (to/from Boston, MA) from June 26 - July 18 of 2015. When I got a good price ($950) on a flight into Paris and out of Geneva on Icelandair for June 24 - July 18 I booked it and changed the itinerary around a bit. I was able to book these flights in December (which was great to have things settled and paid for so early).

Okay, so that said, I've been using Yapta.com to track flight prices for all possible options. I started tracking flights in September and kept tracking them out of general interest. Here is what I found in a nutshell:

  1. The flight I booked ($950) has steadily risen bit by bit over time and, while still the cheapest option on those days, now costs $1,300
  2. The original flight options (search covers all major carriers) were at $1,700 in September and prior to today had dropped down to $1,650.
  3. This morning, March 8, one carrier (Lufthansa) has dropped its price from $1650 to $950. So....that's 105 days (or 3.5 months) from the departure date before any meaningful movement on this flight price occurred.

I find all of this pretty interesting so I figured I would share.

Keep watching - I bet it doesn't take long for that Lufthansa price to go back up and past where it was before...

Buying plane tickets is like Sodom and Gomorrah. Don't look back....
