Food tour

I want to do food tastings in Paris. Should I book a food tour with a tour company or simply go to a local market? If a tour, please suggest what area. I was thinking about Montmartre or Le Marais. Any recommendations regarding a tour or market would be appreciated. I will be there on December 17

I have not done a food tour in Paris, but I've done them in other cities with three different companies, all excellent:

On these food tours, they usually have an arrangement with vendors to serve small portions so you can get a sampling of a wide variety of products from a wide variety of providers. There's usually a combination of markets, restaurants, pastry shops, and sometimes street food. I think that could be hard to accomplish if you try to do it on your own. But doing it on your own might be a different kind of adventure. Depends on what you think you'd enjoy more.

If you haven’t already checked out Eating Europe, make sure you do. They have tours in several cities, and for Paris, they have specific tours for Montmarte and for Marais, although I’m not sure that either includes a market visit.

We’ve taken one of their Rome tours, which was outstanding, and included the Testaccio Market where the guide’s wife worked, visiting several of the stands there, and at the end, he suggested other purveyors in the neighborhood, as well as a restaurant that’s become our favorite in Rome. I’m certain that their Montmarte or Marais guide would be a source of tons of information, including maybe a market to visit.

Paris by Mouth does great food tours. I took my second one with them this year. It was on the left bank. My previous one was in the Marais, also very good.
