Font De Gaume Queue anyone?

Hi Everyone,

Im spending 4 days in the Dordogne end of June. We did not have this trip in mind until Feb, so I didn't even try to get tickets for Font De Gaume and just assumed I would go elsewhere (Lascaux II and/or Rouffignac, and/or Perch Merle). However, as I am getting my details in order, Im thinking I may want to try for Font De Gaume after all (queue early). So here is what I am wondering:

Ive read that all the people in the party for the tickets need to be in the queue when tickets are purchased (emphasis on the last 4 words). Is it bad form to occupy seats with jackets for the rest of my party between the 6a start and the opening of the ticket office? There are 5 of us. Ideally I would leave my husband and 3 kids sleeping and they would come a few hours later (now, how we would do this with only one rental car, I haven't yet figured out ;p )

Thank you so much for your thoughts,
Jessica

It clearly states there that every warm little tushy must be sitting on that hard little wooden seat and they do look outside to see who's there, so no a jacket isn't going to cut it. And how well can you fight back in multiple languages. People from all over the world are there

trying for tickets. However, you get to see Lascaux IV now which replaces Lascaux II! Lucky you. More complete, more exhibits.

No way people are going to let your family sleep in when they get there at 6:30 to get a spot, nor should they. People are good about a short break to the bathroom or whatever but not one person hogging a bunch of seats for people who aren't there.

Might want to being a blanket or extra jacket to sit on; was there in October and literally froze in the early morning dampness. May be better in June but?? There is a cafe/bar on the main street of the village which was open bright and early, serving brandy along with the coffee. Others would be fine if one of you left to pick some up but as others have stated, no saving seats.

Font de Gaume was spectacular and how amazing to visit one of the last remaining caves with original multi-coloured art which is still open to the public. Well worth the effort! We were there @ 0630 and not the first to arrive.

Ok. Good to know Thank you!

I ask because I have done something similar for years in Yosemite, waiting in line for wilderness permits (after they sell out in seconds on the phone months ahead - yes we try every year). I go at 6a, the ticket office opens at 11a, and I go alone and my family shows up later. Many people wait for their entire party and no one minds, and yes, trails sell out (there are only so many hikers allowed per trail). So I wondered what the sentiment was in the line at Font De Gaume. Not the same, clearly. We'll all go, and make an adventure of it

Thank you again for your time

I agree with all previous comments. Was there May 9th and weather is great, very comfortable in the AM. Managed reservation on line back in January. Did 4 PM tour and every tour that day was a sellout. If you have a car, I recommend the Grotte du Pech Merle. Tickets should still be available on line. Both caves are fabulous and each has its unique attributes. I am personally fond of Pech Merle's grand size and variety. The drive was worth it for me and my wife.

Pech Merle is my favorite of all the sites, but Ruffinac is a close second.

We like Font du Gaume best but Rouffignac is pretty swell and they have the best t-shirts. We have also never had a problem getting walk up tickets there. We went once ourselves accompanied by 25 French 5th graders and once took friends who had no visited an authentic cave.

Thanks all!

Good to know. We are heading south from the Dordogne and had Pech Merle in mind as a stop en route, so if we can't muster the enthusiasm for the queue, we know we can go there.

Thanks again,
Jessica
