In late October, I will be flying with my wife and daughter from Madrid to Paris leaving on a Friday and returning on Monday. I am wondering what airport you would recommend. I can get flights to Beauvais–Tillé for about $90, Charles De Gaulle for about $120 and Orly for $150. We are willing to pay extra for convenience and time since we will only have a couple of days there. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
If you plan is to stay in Paris, then either de Gaulle or Orly will work with de Gaulle probably being the closest to the city center. Beauvais is over 50 miles north of the city and takes at least an hour by bus to get to Paris. I have flown from madrid to Beauvais, but we were going to Bayeux before Paris.
dw,
DO NOT use Beauvais! It's WELL outside of Paris and will require both time and money to get into Paris. There's a reason why that one provides the lowest price (I'm assuming that flight is with RyanAir?).
I prefer Orly as it's smaller but in this case the mid-range price to Charles de Gaulle is probably the option I'd choose. You didn't say which airlines you were considering, but easyJet is usually a good bet.
I would choose Charles de Gaulle for the combination of flight price and airport convenience. Beuavais is nowhere near Paris. See also http://www.ricksteves.com/travel-tips/transportation/connecting-in-europes-hub-airports.
Either deGaulle or Orly. Beauvais is so much further out than either one of them, and the way into town so expensive, that is absolutely eats up any purported savings on the ticket price.
Orly Airport is physically closer to the southern side of Paris while Charles de Gaulle is northeast, so your hotel location could affect your choice. Both have plenty of public transit. The Orly terminals are smaller so may be easier to navigate. The official website for the Aeroports de Paris has plenty of commuter info for both airports http://www.aeroportsdeparis.fr/ADP/en-GB/Passagers/Home/
CDG worth the extra $30 in fare price for convenience. Is it still bus and slow metro from Orly ??
Orly and CDG are about equal for convenience to central Paris. Avoid Beauvais unless it is much, much cheaper.
I think if taking public transit in I would choose CDG.. fast and easy , and cheap on RER.. ( 10 euros).
Frankly.. I would never choose Beauvais.. its 90 kms from Paris ,, not worth saving 30=50 euros to me.
Orly is quite a bit closer to Paris than CDG; it is by far the most convenient. A taxi from Orly to wherever you are staying in Paris would be about 30-35 Euro. Taking the train from CDG would cost you 30 Euro and a taxi about 50-55. I would never fly into Beauvais; very inconvenient.
WE flew the opposite way from Orly to Seville a couple of years ago. It cost us 30 Euro from Montparnasse to Orly by cab.
Is it still bus and slow metro from Orly ??
from Orly it is the 'Orlyval' train to Anthony and then the RER for 12 Euro. This makes it more expensive than a taxi if you have 3 people and really not worth it with two. We have consistently paid about 30-35 for a taxi and 3 people pay 36 Euro for the inconvenient annoying public transport. Oddly it is cheaper on public transport from CDG and easier -- 10 Euro and RER into the city. Taxi is quite a bit more though.
