Flying Home from Geneva Airport, Need Advice

Hi,

The final days of my family trip to France will be spent in Annecy (July 2015) and our flight home is from Geneva. I will be booking the rental car for the trip soon so I need to at least preliminarily decide on how to get to the airport. Here are the options I'm pondering:

  1. Drive the rental car there - drop it off on the French side
  2. Turn in the car the previous day and take a taxi
  3. Turn in the car the previous day and take the bus

Our flight is at 2pm on a Saturday. Taking into account convenience, cost (including fees to enter Switzerland?), and reliability for making our flight, please provide advice.

Thanks,

Matt from Somerville, MA

Providing you have plenty of time, I would go for option #1. Dropping off cars at the Geneva airport is not complicated. It isn't a huge facility and things are fairly straightforward.

2 isn't bad either but you'll waste part of a day going to and from the airport when dropping off the car. That said, Geneva is a nice place to spend your last day with plenty to see and do. It's a short ride (20 - 25 minutes depending on traffic) to the airport if you choose to take a taxi.

I wouldn't go for option #3 unless you absolutely have to.

Option 1 sounds fine. Dropping the car a day earlier may or may not decrease your rental price, depending on time of day and how long the rental is for. www.viamichelin.com puts the driving time from Annecy at 45 minutes, and for caution you could double that, but you still have plenty of time to make the drive and drop off the car by 11:00 a.m.

Super, thanks.

Do I have to avoid driving in Switzerland at all to avoid extra fees?

No, Matt. You just have to use normal roads and stay off any Swiss ones with a Green sign. Only motorways, expressways and roads with the expressway sign, even if only one lane, require the 40 Swiss Frank Vignette.

Stay on side streets in Switzerland and you will be fine....

(I'm previously from Porter Square - right behind the Jack-in-the-Box behind the Sears, if either of them are still there)

I'd probably go for #1, unless you can return the car in Annecy the day before.
There used to be a useful map on the Geneva airport's web site (I haven't checked to see if it's still there) showing different ways to drive to the airport w/o having to go on a road requiring a vignette. We've flown out of Geneva a couple of times, and have gotten to the airport different ways. Once we dropped our car off in Annecy before staying there, then took a bus to the airport from Annecy. Another time we stayed in Geneva then took the train to the airport.
(P.S. Like Nigel, I used to live in Somerville, for 17 years).

Thanks for the input. Yes, my intent with options 2 and 3 was to drop the car off in Annecy, which is possible. Sorry if this was not clear. But it seems like driving all the way in to Geneva Airport is the way to go and I will plan for that.

I'm amazed at how many people pass through Somerville. Porter Square has changed significantly since your days here Nigel. Davis Square is practically the hippest place in all of New England at the moment.

My son and I stayed in an airbnb accommodation in Somerville a couple of years ago after I picked him up from camp. Great old Victorian house - stayed in their library for a few nights so we could visit American Revolutionary War sites. Ate at a great Indian restaurant if I remember right! Cute town...:)
