First trip to Paris

My wife & I are planning to be in Paris for 3 nights in October. We really enjoy taking in the local culture (restaurants, bars, shops, etc.) and a bit of History as well. What area would someone recommend for us to stay in that will suit our needs? Our budget is at around $200 USD per night. We definitely want to be within walking distance to the restaurants, bars and in close proximity to the tourist spots.

I have stayed in the Hotel Muguet, near the Ecole Militaire metro. I like the area as I am enamoured with the Eiffel tower. I love to see it first thing in the morning and before I go to bed.

It is near rue Cler, which is well covered in Rick's books. Others on this forum do not recomend the area as it is touristy, but it is now familiar to me. I have my favorite cafes, La Terrasse is one, right on a corner of the metro. Locals and tourists visit. Food is always good, and is a fabulous people watching spot.

We stayed at the Hotel Cluny Sorbonne in the 5th, in a room for 2 people for about 100 euros per night. The hotel is near the Sorbonne university so the neighborhood has a lot of young people and of course a lot of stores and restaurants. It's about a ten-minute walk to the Seine and a couple of Metro/RER stops.

On your budget, three very gorgeous, comfortable, and friendly hotels are Hotel Le Relais Montmartre, Hotel Le Relais Des Halles and Hotel Le Relais Du Louvre- all owned by the same company. These elegant hotels are in great areas with much to see and do and also have Paris' excellent public transportation close by. Don't hesitate to use Paris' public transport. It is what the locals do and is very easy and convenient (more costly and aggravating to have a car in the city). It is not like using much of America's public transport which has the image of being for the poor and working class. This is definitely not the case in Paris where everyone uses the Metro!

These hotels have large comfortable rooms and beds, are beautifully decorated, have friendly staff and are convenient to the things you'll want to see and do.They come with all of the comforts and amenities. Here are their websites so you can get full details and see photos:

I have stayed in two hotels in Paris, both of which I can highly recommend. Hotel Beaugency is just a half block off of Rue Cler and very close to the Metro and about 10 minutes from the Eiffel Tower. Many restaurants, shops, markets, and sites within easy walking distance. Also Hotel de Londres Eiffel is a very nice hotel. The price is a little more than Beaugency. However, it is only about 2 blocks form the Eiffel Tower andalso close to metro, shops, markets, etc. These hotels are about 6 blocks apart. Both hotels have 24/7 English speaking staff and are very helpful. Both offer breakfast for a charge. You wouldn't go wrong with either of them.

We liked the Hotel des Grandes Ecoles in the Latin Quarter near the Place Contrescarpe and two Metro stations. There are many good choices in the RS guidebook and on booking.com, within your budget (if the $200 is for hotel only). Closer to the river is more convenient and, of course, more expensive. Three nights will make you want to come back for more!

I just came back from Paris, I stayed in Hotel Kingston in Rue Cler, this hotel room(€102) is a little small but very clean and comfortable. it located three blocks from the Eifle tower, five blocks from the river cruise, two blocks from Metro and my favor restaurant CAFE CONSTANT. I spent €12 on Paris Opéra Garnier for a wonderful Ballet show ticket instead of visit it during the day which cost €10. Enjoy!

We have used this studio for the past 9 or 10 years. Walk to Louvre in 20 minutes, bus it in 15. Bus stop 2 minutes from your door. Anvers Metro stop 5 minutes. Well within your budget.
