First time in Europe - Rental Car drop-off question

Hi everyone,

For our trip in September we will be driving in Alsace and Loire for the first 5 days. We plan to drop the car at Orly airport and then take a taxi to our hotel in Paris ( where we spend the next 6 nights ).

When we drop off the car, I assume there will be a terminal shuttle to take up back to arrivals/departures where we can find a taxi stand. I'm sure other people have done this, but I can't quite seem to find out for sure. ( Nervous about he rogue taxi's ! )

I'd appreciate your help. Thanks

Couldn't you call the rental car company and ask them if there's a shuttle (in French, une navette)?

Which rental company are you planning to use?

Hertz = giant multinational company. You call them and I doubt you will be connected to someone at Orly who can give you a good answer - more likely you get a distant call center.

It's been a while since I went through Orly and I don't pretend to know it well, but my recollection was that it's not a huge, vast place (certainly not like CDG). My sense is that it should be pretty trivial to get from the Hertz return facility to the general taxi/transit area. Unless you are planning to drop your car at an odd hour (middle of the night) I probably wouldn't worry about it. Hopefully someone who knows Orly well will come along to confirm that it'll be a non-issue.

The parking lot PO where you will return the Hertz car is right across from the Orly West Terminal, where the taxi stand is located. The Hertz employee who checks in your car will direct you to the proper walkway. There are usually carts available for your luggage.

Thank you so much. I tend to sweat out the little details.

I'm used to Logan ( Boston) where everything is far apart.

I think that logically there must be. Otherwise, how would the business man/woman fly to Orly, rent a Hertz car, drive to the client's location (suburbs of course), conduct business, drive back to Orly for the flight home. If there was no shuttle, how would they get to the terminal for the flight home? Surely Hertz will not leave them stranded in the return lot on their own.

As Barbara said, the parking structure for the car rental is attached to the airport. Yes, the rogue taxis are right next to the official taxi stand, much to the frustration of the legitimate drivers, but just ignore them, don’t let them distract you, walk past and get into the official line.

Walk. That's how it's done at most airports.

We have dropped cars at Orly and taken a cab to Paris but I can't remember the details (we drop cars at lots of airports). I don't however remember any issues, so either there was a shuttle or we easily walked to the terminal to catch a cab. Be aware that car pick up and drop is not the grab and go thing we do in the US where you an have your car in 5 minutes or less and drop it same way. You want a receipt that it is gassed and undamaged and that will take a awhile and pick ups are often an hour or more.

KER
I hope you aren’t discouraged to ask questions, but do come back. We usually try to be helpful, and as you saw, a couple of us had returned cars to Orly and were able to give you better information than look it up. And Tim had the telephone number in the second answer.

Thanks Bets,

It was my very first post here and was quite alarmed at the snark ( And I have bought the RIck Steves books and do watch his shows ).

I research extensively, but like to ask questions of folks who have been there - done that. I participate on another forum and I have been reading this one for a while.

Our kids have flown the nest and instead of paying college tuition - we are now planning vacations.
