Since most Paris museums are free on the first Sunday of each month, can one just walk in without visiting the ticket booth? I realize there might be a security line which a visitor would have to pass through first before entering the museum. Thank you
Last time we did it, just get in the security line. Louvre will be packed, try the Orsay, or Pompidou.
That is what free means. BUT - in our experience - we avoid the free days. The locals will overwhelm the place.
I agree w Frank. I won’t go on a free day, especially summer months. I’d rather pay and go when it’s less crowded.
The Louvre at least doesn't have free Sundays in the summer; I am not sure about the other museums. I have always felt that free Sunday was the most expensive day to visit a major museum. It can be good for smaller more obscure places with smaller crowds generally.
Yes, you need to go through security and the lines can be very, very long.
I have had some places, I think the Conciergerie, issue me a ticket on free days (maybe just for them to keep track?) so you may have to get a free ticket. If so, they'll point you that direction. Locals and tourists flock to the big museums on free Sundays. I think it's a good day to do something else because the lines can be incredible. I'd suggest a park or something that isn't free that day like a small private museum. Alternatively, beat the crowd by arriving at least 30 minutes before opening and waiting in line while it's still short. Even though it's free, I always find short lines at the Orangerie.
Make sure you don't get a multi day museum pass and inadvertently activate it for a free day (like start a three-day pass on that Friday or Saturday).
The Orsay will be more packed than the Louvre.
On free Sundays, I have been to the Orsay and the Louvre. Very, very crowded. Not enjoyable at all.
You get what you pay for.
