First meal in Paris - Fav restaurant 7th Arris-Rue Cler

Please share any positive restaurant experiences in the Rue Cler area. We are looking for a lunch suggestion. Is there a place you loved and wanted to go back again and again ? And was there a dish that was fabulous ?

Thank you !!

If you are arriving from overseas, you will be jet lagged and any meal will not be memorable. One of my symptoms of jet lag is to be slightly queasy until after I have rested. Check the Rick Steves France or Paris guidebook for restaurant suggestions in that area.

I always head for Cafe Central at the corner of Rue Cler and Rue du Champ de Mars. In particular I like it because they have a veggie burger that I enjoy and good frites. That might not be your criteria, though!

I have got a "Plan B" this year and that is to pick up a salad at the M&S Food Hall right outside the baggage claim/customs exit for Terminal 2E and then after I've dropped my bags, take it over to the Champ du Mars if it is a lovely day! Then I'll eat at Cafe Central for dinner. Or Cafe Roussillon down at the next corner. Many enjoy Le Petit Cler but I've never eaten there.

If you don't feel like a whole meal, Amorino gelato shop is just a few doors down, lol!!

Les Ombres if you want a really spectacular view of the Eiffel Tower while you eat - can't get more "Wow, I'm in Paris!" than that. It's about a 15-20 minute walk from Rue Cler.

La Fontaine de Mars is about a 10 minute walk from Rue Cler - very much what you would picture in your mind when you think old school Paris eatery. Very good traditional French comfort food.

Another vote for Café Constant.
Amazing and memorable.

Really disliked Fontaine de Mars. Expensive and not good, imo.

Agree with Cafe Constant. Another Constant restaurant on the same street is Les Cocottes and the food is equally good--very casual.

I'd suggest just strolling up and down Rue Cler and pop into whatever café looks appealing. They're all good and have friendly staff.

Café Constant is practically next to rue Cler, a very short distance. You have to eat somewhere and there’s no reason it can’t be Café Constant on day one. I don’t understand that. Why not start off with one of the best places to eat in Paris?

I guess it depends on how you react to jet lag/travel tiredness. It's a bit spendy to me at least as the time I ate there I had soup and salad - the only things that could be made vegan - and it was about 30E excluding the wine. I went away hungry as those portions are sized to be starters. I'd hate to waste a good meal if I'm too tired or have an upset or unsettled stomach.

I know I'm very much in the minority, but I visited Cafe Constant a few years ago and did not enjoy it at all. I was a solo diner, and despite arriving early in evening (lots of open tables) I was seated at a table (half a table really) smushed up against a wall and a corner. I'm used to tight spaces when dining in Paris, but the bigger problem was the food. I had a shrimp dish for entree and it was meh, and my main dish was very dry chicken.
If your "first meal" is after a long flight, like others have said, I don't suggest planning anything too special for the first day. The wonder of arriving/being in Paris (no matter how many times I've had my "first day back") is to just wander, watch, and go where you feel a pull.

The Rue Cler area is where we have stayed for years. Highly recommend La Terrasse right by the Ecole Militare metro stop. Le Petit Cler also has a wonderful menu. Both restaurants have a daily special. For breakfast, the Cafe du Marche on Rue Cler has a wonderful omelet. Also the PTT has a light American breakfast (one egg, croissant, juice and hot beverage for a very reasonable price). Depending one night of the week, both the La Terrasse and Petit Cler will usually offer Pot au Feu - you definitely try this or the Beef Bourgandy at either restaurant. La Terrase on Sunday's offers Millefeule for dessert and it truly is a thousand leaes of flakey crust pastry. Also recommend the Rum Baba and Tarte Tatin at either restaurant. You will see quite a few locals from the neighborhood at both PTT and Cafe du Marche. We have some regulars for over 6 years at the restaurants - no matter the time of year we go.

I was a solo diner at Café Constant, they treated me very well and i had as nice a table as anyone else. I had a 3 course prix fixe meal for €37. Each course was amazing and i couldn’t finish the first two courses as there was too much food for me. I was able to finish the desert though... : )

I got food poisoning at Café du Marche. Can happen anywhere i know, but just sayin’...
