Finding B&B's in France and Portugal in September

I will be traveling with a friend through France into Portugal in September by train. We would like to find B&B's upon arrival in small towns along the way. Is this a risky proposition at that time of year?

IF you have already planned which towns you will stay overnight, I would definitely reserve B&B’s ahead of time. I will be in France this September and booked a few B&B’s several months ago that are now fully booked. I think the smaller the town, the less options you will have, especially if you wait.

If you’re planning the whole trip with maximum flexibility, you can just reserve something ( if you wouldn’t be stressed with paying more if those are the only ones left) on-line when you’re at the previous town.

Note that there's only about one train per day on any given route between Spain and Portugal, often an overnight. Buses may be more convenient, so expect to compare both options for most routes after the French border. Guidebooks will help to summarize them.

Thanks for your help. We will look at bus options as well. When I went to Italy 13 years ago we found a travel kiosks in the town and they found rooms for us. Is that still the case? I really appreciate your help everyone. What a great forum.
