I am thinking of taking the ferry from Portsmouth UK to Caen. I would actually like to get Honfleur but the ferry there does not run daily when I want to go. I can arrive at Caen about 10 pm or early next morning. I am not sure how safe the port is at night, nor how easy it is to get to the train station or city center. Rome2Rio indicates 10 miles from the ferry port to downtown Caen. That does not look very inviting to arrive in a part at night and then have to got 10 miles in an unfamiliar town. Any advice?
The ferry to Honfleur is actually ferry to Le Havre then bus across the bridge to Honfleur.
For Caen the late evening arrival no longer has a connecting bus into Caen- you would need to take a taxi.
But the morning arrival has a connecting bus to Caen railway station.- Twisto Route 12- https://tim.twisto.fr/tim/data/pdf/2782_L12-sept2023%20au%2025092023.pdf
Re- the late night bus 12 which ends at Caen Tour Leroy. That IS in Caen city centre, so maybe that and a late night city taxi to your final destination.
Thanks.
I am not sure what the taxi situation would be arriving in a port at 10 pm. Seems safer to take the night ferry.
I learned something today. I never knew there were ferries marketed to Caen (which is about 15 km inland). Is it actually to Ouistreham (just marketed as Caen), or does the ferry actually go up the river to Caen?
Yes the ferry actually goes to Ouistreham.
For info, Brittany Ferries has a crossing that departs Portsmouth at 8:00 AM and arrives Ouistreham at 3:00 PM.
I think that is standard. It's really egregious with Cruise Ships. For example, labeling Cadiz as Sevilla, which is 90 minutes away. Southampton is listed as a London, despite being 2.5 hours away.
