I will be here in October for 2 nights, essentially 1 day. I was thinking see the bridge of course. Did you like Musee Calvet or Musee Angladon best? I was thinking the Petit Palais might be more interesting than the old gothic Pope's palace. Tell me your favorite experiences please.
The Calvet is a respectable regional museum. Check on-line to see if has a special show during your visit. The Palais des papes is inspiring from the outside, only frugally interesting inside.
You could walk over the motorway bridge to the island for good views. There used to be a small ferry, for free, but that was pre-pandemic.
The inside market garden will make you hungry (of course; it's France) but it packs up starting around noon.
I've always retrieved useful information, on-line or in person, from the regional tourism office. It can also help with jaunts outside the city.
My friend June and I had a wonderful half day walking tour with Nina Seffusatti which we arranged a week or so ahead of time. She was recommended by Vero (France with Vero) and both are RS tour guides. We found her both knowledgeable (it's been her home town for decades) and charming.
I toured by myself through the Papal Palace and found it mildly interesting but I wouldn't recommend that you take the time with such a short visit.
We were there in November when one night was the local Cote de Rhone wine festival. That was great fun. You might look to see if there is anything special happening while you are there.
We have done a Food Tour in Avignon and absolutely loved it!
IMHO, Avignon, like Verona in Italy, is a very nice place just "to be".
There are no blockbuster sites, but it is a very pleasant place to explore. We checked out the Pope's Palace, and it was okay. What we really enjoyed was just walking around - especially walking along the Rue de Teinturiers and enjoying a burger and great but not very expensive wine at Cave des Pas Sages.
I enjoyed the hiltop Jardins de Rocher and the Les Halles Market.
Thanks, everyone. I will definitely go to the covered market. I love 'just being there.' I will probably spend my day walking around, stopping for coffee &/or wine, taking photos-definitely one of 'the' bridge.
Laurie Beth, we found a very nice and friendly wine bar/tapas place for dinner one night. It's called Le 17 and is right on the place beside one of the churches.
