Favorite places in French Alps other than Chamonix and Annecy

Visiting friends in Grenoble and Aix Les Bains. Other than Chambery, Chamonix, Lyon, and Annecy, any suggestions? Looking for more French culture and history than mountain wilderness. Any suggestions help. 9 nights total
