Favorite "cheap eats" in Saumur and the Amboise area?

Hi,

Our trip is coming up quickly--mid April :) Does anyone have any recommendations for favorite "cheap eats" (besides picnicking which we usually do) for either lunch or dinner in Saumur and Amboise? We like most all foods, usually it's budget that is our limiting factor.

Thanks!

Cheap places to eat are often those where locals who work in the area go for lunch during their breaks.

One of the best ways to find cheap places to eat in France is to look for "bistro".

Restaurants with a chalkboard listing their dishes are worth considering. For example, this one in Amboise:

Also in Amboise, a charcuterie where you can eat (and drink local wine):

A cheap lunch with a starter, main course, and dessert shouldn't cost more than €25.

When I was in Saumur in October 2024 I ate twice at Teatro Divino which is just beside the roundabout by the main bridge. I don't remember why but other restaurants were closed the 2nd night but I did not mind eating here twice. It was delicious. I don't know if it ticks your box of "cheap eats" or not. I looked for a website and did not find one. There is a FB page but it hasn't been updated since October 2025.

There is also an artisanal chocolatier in Saumur with delicious chocolate. I got some as presents for friends and then dearly wished I'd gotten more for myself, lol.

Are you interested in Neolithic stuff? There is an interesting dolmen in Saumur.

Thanks JoLui and Pam for the suggestions. Neolithic "stuff" is not really my thing, now, turn that stone into cemetery monuments and I'm all over that :)

Well, laughing, no burials were mentioned on the info boards at the site BUT they apparently used the Dolmen as a garage for their car and for storage! Car is now parked behind it, haha. 🤣

I did read that about the car parking, Pam. That's too funny!
