Fast train from CDG to Avignon

Hi.

I will be traveling with a friend in June to Provence. Avignon is the round trip base.
I'm looking at rates on SNCF and it seems to be over 500 euros for our round trip tickets.
The June dates are not up yet so I'm basing it on May.

At first glance, we may be stuck in the airport for a while upon arrival. We land about 8:30 am and think our first safe option is a train after 11:30 or so. Does that sound right? They show the first available for us at 3 pm, which seems like a wasted day :(

Some train journeys have best views on one side or the other - anything we should know about these trips?

Might there be a better way? We waste a lot of time in the AP and it is rather expensive. Any suggestions or insights are helpful!

Thanks for any help!

The alternative is to take the RER B to Gare du Nord and change to the RER D to Gare de Lyon, or RER B to Les Halles and change to the RER A to Gare de Lyon. I know the change at Les Halles is cross-platform.

At Gare de Lyon, there are frequent fast trains to Avignon, probably at better prices.

Another thing, if you are arriving on a Friday or Saturday, you are competing with Parisians going on Holiday.

I don't think one side or the other is preferred.

I use the trainline website for info because it is easy. It currently shows several afternoon trains from CdG to Avignon with no connections. You can judge the prices for yourself. These schedules can change so keep check closer to your travel dates.

Southam.
Thanks for the suggestion.
I'm on that site again today and only see bus options...from 8.5 hours to 15+ hour journeys.
Would you mind directing me to what you are finding?

Thanks!

When do June tickets go on sale?
Thanks!
Lee

Also - one of the travelers is 65. Is there a benefit/negative to getting a senior ticket? If the plane is late, can you change it or is it more restricted than a younger person's tkt.?

Ticket generally go on sale 90 days before the date of travel. But sometimes, they go on sale earlier than that especially for summer travel. If the tickets are not on sale now, you can sign up to be notified by going to sncf-connect.com and entering your travel date and if tickets are not yet for sale you can sign up to receive a notification when they do go on sale. When are you traveling? I ask because I just bought tickets for a trip on June 17th. There are no additional restrictions on the "senior" ticket and there is no discount on the fare unless you have a senior discount loyalty card. You will have to look through your tickets terms to see how refundable or changeable they are.

Lee,

I've done the trip from CDG to Avignon via TGV several times, and have just bought tickets for this Spring. Here are some thoughts:

  • Yes sitting at the train station station can be a long drag. Is it a wasted day? We're just glad to get it over with.

  • I bought tickets via Trainline. They have been great for us, very clear and simple. It seems the tickets became available at about 90 days out.

  • As to cost, make sure you know about InOui vs Ouigo. Ouigo is the budget option. We've preferred InOui trains. But there can be a factor of 2 difference between two InOui trains leaving at different times. As it happens, we've landed on the more expensive trains based on our scheduling needs. So, it will cost us, two people, about $550 dollars r/t from CDG to Avignon.

No tickets yet. Last night while looking, I was sent a "You're on the notification list for this train" message. It was good but I was surprised to see the train I was looking at vanish.

Are there fewer direct options on Saturdays?

Should I use the SNCF Voyager or the SNCF Connect app/website?

This was not so tough when pre-planning a couple of months ago! :)

Thanks very much,
Lee
