Is there a museum for fashion in Paris that shows actual clothes from long ago eras all the way past Dior? We would love to visit. Thanks for the information.
Yes, the Musée Galliera is a museum of fashion and fashion history located at 10, avenue Pierre 1er de Serbie, in the 16th arrondissement. Used to have a different name. Probably closed Mondays. The museum opened in 2013 after being closed for major renovation.
[But see Terry's post below for important information.]
Sharon, just two kilometers away and also in the 16th is the Museum of Counterfeits, where you'll find examples of bogus Louis Vuitton bags and Chanel perfume next to the real things. Champagne, baby food, watches, auto parts, chain saws and more are all here in their genuine and black market forms, a rather fascinating place.
Before you go, check the website for the Musée des Arts Décoratifs near the Palais Royal. A few years ago I went to a fantastic exhibition on 1970s and '80s fashion. Currently, and through July 19, the museum "is unveiling a collection of over 3,000 buttons unique in the world, and also featuring a selection of more than 100 female and male garments and accessories by emblematic couturiers such as Paul Poiret, Elsa Schiaparelli, Christian Dior, Jean Paul Gaultier and Patrick Kelly." Some of the items date back to the 18th century, apparently.
Buttons may not tickle your fancy, but it's worth checking the website to see if there are other fashion-related exhibitions.
Note that the Palais Galliera is open to the public only when there is a temporary exhibition. Otherwise the museum is closed.
