Family “activities” in Paris?

Next summer (late June, early July) we will be in Paris-Chamonix-St. Remy-London. I have plenty of “things to do” ideas, as opposed to only “places to go” ideas for London (e.g. afternoon tea, go to the theatre, catch a cricket match, ride a double decker bus), and some for Chamonix (hiking, raclette dinner, riding up the mountains, maybe visit a therme) and some for Provence (bike ride, visit to winery, day trip to Cassis to see the Calanques NP, swim in the pool at our homestay), but I don’t really have a lot of ideas like that for Paris. I think I have a reasonable schedule of activity for Paris (day 1 — arrive, settle in, shop for “at home” breakfasts for our stay, visit Jardin du Luxembourg; day 2 — Notre Dame, wander Ile de la Cite and Ile St Louis, Seine River Cruise; day 3 — Orangerie and Jardin des Tuileries, wander Montmartre, ride funicular; day 4 —Musee d’Orsay, night walk near the Eiffel Tower; and day 5 — Versailles), but I’d like some other “experiences” to pepper our plan. There will, I expect, be plenty of cafe sitting and park picnicing. I have thought of the 2CV night rides but the lack of back seat shoulder seat belts — I asked— gives me serious pause for my girls. I hope the ideas Iisted for our other destinations give an impression of the kind of thing I’m after. I’m generally very happy to wander aimlessly and be spontaneous, but with children age 9 and 6 and my husband (who is happy to let me make all the plans) along I want to have a good skeleton plan. Am I being dumb? Thanks for any ideas.

Paris Walks may have some itineraries that appeal to all of you.

Paris Muse has family itineraries. Not cheap, but unique. We took a private tour of the Louvre with them (adults) and thought it worth every penny as we were not just wandering.

Paris by Mouth has fun food tours.

Go to either the Bois de Bologne or Parc Vincennes in Paris (one on the East Edge (go to Port Doree metro stop) and the other on the west edge. Both have small lakes where you can rent rowboats and picnic and row about. Pretty places. You can see the Eiffel Tower from the lake in Bologne and the Lac Daumesnil near Port Doree has a lovely little picturesque follie on the water -- a sort of greek temple. There is also another lake with boats on the other side of Vincennes and also the ruins of the 'human zoo' of the international exposition in the early 20th century. People from French colonies lived in buildings representing their cultures while tourists strolled by and observed them. ( I thought this was disgusting when I read about it but it was a real thing in those days; they did the same thing at the famous Chicago World's Fair in the late 19th century)

Climb the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame Tower and/or dome of Sacre Couer tower.

If the Atelier Lumiere is up and running definitely put that on your schedule.

Not sure where you are staying but try to wander over to the plaza at the Pompidou museum, when I was there in the summer there always seemed to be something going on over there - mimes, jugglers, clowns, music, etc.. Also, kids like to ride the 'hamster tube' escalators which used to be free to do but now I think it's €5. If you do want to see the museum there is a special kids section.

Go up to the top of the Arc de Triomphe just before dark to watch the lights come on on the streets radiating out from there and stay after dark to watch the ET sparkle - a great view from there.

Parc Monceau (in the 8th) is popular with families. It has several 'follies' - scaled down versions of a pyramid, a dutch windmill, Corinthian pillars, a Chinese fort- and play areas for the kids, a good way to expend some excess energy and have a picnic too.

I don't think that kids are generally going to be interested in Paris Walks. Whenever I have been on them with kids they kids always appear bored to death.

See if there are any exhibits at La Villette. Even the Musee des Arts Forains could prove to be fun for the family

I think you have a good start with your planning. I can't think of many other things, except maybe going up inside the Eiffel Tower? It's an adventure worth the crowds. ( of course get tix months out) And we ended up too afraid of Versailles crowds and just did the grounds and smaller palace. It was still a treat because it was so enormous to see! Def rent a golf cart for fun.
Also don't buy too many things for breakfast. My kids loved my husband running to the corner boulangerie/patisserie for fresh croissants and quiche each morning. It was a great start to the day!

Rick's Paris guidebook has a chapter on activities for kids. In general, several parks rent sailboats to sail on a pond, have spaces where locals play the popular sport of boules/petanque, have weekend puppet shows, or offer pony rides, Ferris wheels, or big chess sets. Luxembourg Gardens have many of these features (but not usually a Ferris wheel).

What about a chocolate walk where you sample chocolate from different shops?

I’m sure lots of chocolate will be had. :-) But I bet the girls would love an intentional hunt.
