The Nietzsche path is a proper hiking trail, it is uneven, with steps, gravel, rock. See here for an example, there for another one. The negative height difference of about 1,000 feet can be hard on the knees, and you need shoes with a good grip. A walking stick would help. It is stunning, though.
I hiked up a few years ago. I was 52 and in OK shape (and alone with an empty water bottle). It’s very steep and there are big boulders to “hoist” yourself up on. BUT I’m glad I did it. I did NOT hike back down (I Ubered back to Villefranche) there are lots of loose stones and I felt that I would likely twist an ankle.
