Eze-le-Village back to Paris

My husband and I have 5 nights to spent in Provence/French Riviera area before returning to Paris. We are thinking of parking ourselves at St. Remy for the first 4 nights as base to explore the Provence region and then the last night at Eze-le-Village in Hotel Chateau de la Chevre d'Or for a splurge before heading back to Paris the next day. Where should we return our car and take a TGV to Paris? from Eze-le-Village or from Nice?

There is no train station in the upper part of Eze. If you don't keep the car (check on where you'll need to park it!), you'll need to take a bus or taxi down to Eze-sur-Mer then the local train to Nice before changing to the TGV A quick Google turned up an old post in TripAdvisor that said you need to prebook the taxi and should expect to pay about 30€. That was about six years ago.

I'd be surprised if there's a car-rental agency in Eze. Check carefully into your driving route from Eze to the car-rental spot in Nice. Traffic can get very clogged along the Promenade des Anglais; I don't know what you might encounter in other parts of the city.

I'm pretty sure too that you'll have to get back to Nice before returning your car. And as acraven mentioned, there's no train from Eze-le-Village.

You should also look into flying from Nice back to Paris as the train ride is quite long.

I think you're going to have to drive back to Nice, either train station or airport, to drop the car.

I'm planning a plane from Nice to Paris, a little over an hour and roughly $50 for the trip.

First, you can't really take the TGV all the way because it's slow tracks along a beautiful route from Eze/Nice to Marseille. The train speeds up after Marseille, making the trip 6 hours.

Eze is the size of a handkerchief, so a car rental would be a big surprise. Agree with others that Nice is your closest.

Unless your hotel has its own parking, the general parking for Eze is at the base of the village, so if you keep the car, you could drive back to Nice train station or airport the next day. Or, upon arrival drive first to Nice, turn the car in and take a taxi to Eze, then the next day catch the local train that will take you to Nice for the 6-hour TGV ride. Or, take the train into Nice and a taxi to the airport. Train time is 6 hours with one change. The flying time is three-four hours with security, waiting, and transiting into Paris. If you fly, Orly airport is easier to get into Paris than CDG.

The TGV does indeed leave from Nice Ville Gare, although the speed is reduced along the coast as mentioned above. There are car rental places clustered near Avenue Thiers (look for that name in the office listing). Btw, the fastest route to the station does not venture close to the Promenade, however, it does generally cut through Nice, However, as others suggested, you might consider a flight. It's comparable in price and may save you time, which you can use to explore another place like Villefranche-sur-Mer before your return flight.

The Chateau Eza has valet parking.

Thank you all so much for sharing your valuable travel experiences and wisdom! I am so grateful to find out that the train is going a long time and it is not going that fast. I didn't even think about flying as an option back to Paris! That is such an awesome idea. Thank you so much! I will look to book the flight back to Paris. So should we then plan on returning the car at Nice's airport?

Saying that the train doesn't go so fast isn't necessarily the exact picture.

Even when it is not going at full TGV speed - which it does all the way from Marseilles to Paris, at about 180 mph or faster - the train is still going between 60 and 100 mph along the coast, following the coast with beautiful views and twisting and turning between the mountains. If it were able to go faster you wouldn't be able to take in the views of the sea and the mountains.

After it speeds up you get the full effect of the speed.

From an airplane you see nothing.

So it really is swings and roundabouts.

Train - around 5 hours door to door, or -

plane half an hour to Nice airport, 2 hours waiting, 1 hour flying, one hour getting bags back and getting out of CDG airport, one hour to the centre of Paris - about 5.5 hours all in.

So about a wash - do you want to fly and feel like you are going faster, or see the scenery, all in about the same time? Only you know which you prefer.

Of course it is true that from Eze le Village (have you seen pictures of the donkey track to the top of the hill?) to either the airport or station would be taxi and about the same time. You wouldn't want to have a car at Eze.

The choice of plane vs. train depends on your situation and where your next destination is... the train can conveniently take you to the center of Paris in about 5 hours and 40 minutes. As someone mentioned above, you can fly into CDG or Orly, and end up in the city in five hours or less (the domestic flights tend to have faster times before and after the flight). If this is your last leg, people tend to take the flight.

It is very helpful to know about both the comparison between taking the train ride vs. flying. From Eze back to Paris is our last leg of the trip. When I looked into the train and the time, it is taking more than 5.5 hours to Paris. Perhaps I read it wrong but I was shocked at how long it takes - it is more like 7 hours. I didn't want to spend an entire day on the train so I opted it for the plane. I wasn't aware of the benefit of the coastal and mountain scenery as described. It sounds wonderful. I guess we will have to just hopeful a return trip in the near future :o)
