extended stay: 4 weeks/ 1 month Brittany

I want to stay for an extended period in one place in Brittany, my first choice was off season.

I know off season the weather is lousy, that's the appeal. I want to know if everything is shut down or just certain areas, and where it's best to locate a rental car and for use of public transit. I prefer use of public transit but expect either to hire a driver or get a rental as well. I just want to do the entire peninsula. I am more interested in ancient history that WWII if I had to choose.

Alternatively, is it possible to book a stay in July that isn't totally overrun with vacationers? I do want to be near the ocean, but not necessarily a beach. My interest is culture, geography, quiet, and possibly music.

Make a suggestion for better times/places with this in mind?

If you go during the shoulder season, you shouldn't encounter places shut down. I would avoid the winter because not only can it be chilly and windy but the skies will be grey most of the time.

There are certainly places that are not too busy even in July. We stayed on the Bay of Morlaix in Plouezoc'h for a week and loved it! You've got some really ancient history to explore there with the Cairn de Barnenez.

Brittany is not a great place for relying on public transit. It can be done but it's rather time consuming. I'd definitely recommend renting a car. It's easy to drive, there is a good toll-free highway system (Brittany got a special deal to keep their highways free of charge) and secondary roads are in good shape as well.

We spent 5 days in Normandy at the end of October one year and the weather was not all that and of course it gets dark earlier. I'd aim for September or maybe early October or for early spring to avoid the big crowds. Many smaller hotels close off season. I would not spend a month in Brittany without a car; public transport is not set up for tourists during the best of times, it is timed for school kids and workers.

Be aware that the north side is cooler, foggier, and has more drizzle no matter what season. The south coast is the beach area in summer.
