Exploring Tours (the city)

We will be travelling from Bordeaux to Paris in June and have an evening plus a full day planned in Tours. We'll be there on a Monday so most of the museums are closed. Are there any recommendations for the best cathedrals, abbeys, shopping districts, or restaurants? We have heard that Tours is the city that French people want to move to, so curious to see what makes it so liveable. Thanks for your tips!

Hi Jeff
If you search on the forum you'll find many posts with advice.

My recommendation is the Hôtel Océania
The best shopping will be along the main drag, la Rue Nationale. Also near the gare by the Océania hotel there's shopping (think Printemps etc)

Restaurants. I had the best steak of my life at at Le Chien Fou. You should see the size of the bread they cut from. Le Turon is also a sure bet. And you must see the Cathédrale St-Gatien and the Basilique St-Martin. They're both sensational.

Place Plumereau is the place to get a drink in "Old" Tours. And Vieux Tours is absolutely astonishingly old and beautiful.

Hi Jeff,
We were just there last fall and rented a house for a few weeks. In place 'Plum' (ploom) itself, a great morning can be had by going to 'La Vieux Murier' bar/bistro for breakfast whether inside or at an outdoors table. Modest place. Good food. Excellent perspective to watch the (sleepy) world go by at a relaxed pace. *If Nicolas Leger pastry nearby is open, move heaven and earth to go for their Paris-Brest.

Great; thanks for these recommendations. We're staying very close to Pont Wilson so these will be nearby. I definitely want to visit St. Gatien.

Check out France with Vero. She's a RS tour guide that now lives in Tours. She's got lots of videos up about Tours and I think she may even do some guiding there (in addition to her RS tours)

What an interesting possibility! We'll see if she is available during our stay. Looks like you get the insider experience with Véro!
