Our RS Heart of France Tour coming up next month. Only 3 nights in Paris so does anybody have experience with the Paris Museum Pass. The Louvre and Saint Chapelle are included in the tour but a 48 hour pass is available and "skip the line" sounds good. Thoughts?
OK, skip the line is somewhat of a misnomer. Skip the line means you’re skipping the ticket line. You do not get to skip the security line and I have watched people be very upset when the guard sent them into the back of the security line. everybody goes through that line. A lot of the resellers promote this as skip the line pass, but you can skip the line just by buying a time ticket for the day you want to go and you don’t have to buy the pass because you’re only skipping the ticket line
The other problem that people are having, particularly with the Louvre is that there aren’t a lot of slots for the museum pass it appears. Since you already have with Rick, the two that I think are the most problematic I would just be buying tickets for the museums. I want to go to when I want to go there.
Thanks for the clarification of "skip the line". Nearly took the bait on that one!
Since recent changes so that you only get one entry and everyone now has timed entries so there is no line advantage, the pass just has little value. It used to be great as you could say make 3 short visits to the Louvre rather than one long long day -- but that is gone. Also there are limited slots at places like the Louvre for pass holders so people are finding that they could buy tickets for the day they want, but all slots for pass holders are taken. Unless you save a lot of money because you are doing a museum marathon, it is not worth getting. Saving money is the only value left.
Before COVID many people didn't book time slots ahead at museums and so having a ticket or pass got you a quick entry -- now there are usually lines even with reservations (better than without but still no 'skip the line')
One benefit of the Museum Pass is that it becomes a bathroom pass also. Museums have very clean bathrooms and they are free. With so many museums on the Pass, you are never far from bathroom.
I've had a lot of good use from the Museum Pass on previous trips. Sadly, those times are gone. This trip will be single admissions, booking all the major museums online before my trip.
"With so many museums on the Pass, you are never far from bathroom."
True but now with only one visit per museum per pass if you go in for a potty stop you either tour the museum them or skip it. The Museum Pass used to be my "go to" and I used it just like that...for potty breaks! I used to go in to the Orangerie several times per visit because their bathrooms were convenient, lol.
@Galaxie...what museums do you think you might want to visit? In addition to the ones covered on the tour? Take a look at what the cost would be to buy separately? I love the Musee d'Orsay for which you would want a timed entry if you don't have a museum pass. I also like the Cluny Museum and the Archeological Crypt under Notre Dame (yes, it's been back open for a couple of years). Neither of them need timed entries and you can just drop by there when/if you have time/energy. I also enjoy the Carnavalet and the Museum of the Resistance and Liberation, both of which are Paris City Museums and are FREE! (Closed Mondays).
BTW, this is a wonderful tour! You see so many varied sights!
Thanks for all the good comments.
I’m actually debating joining the friends of the Louvre on my next visit so that I can go more than once.
If you are a journalist or a teacher (any level) you can (or could -- I haven't checked lately) get an annual Louvre membership. It was 35 Euro a year when I did it over a decade ago. My husband and I were in Paris for two months and the pass allowed me to take him as a guest during evening openings. Then it was Weds and Friday -- so we went to the Louvre for a couple of hours on Wednesday and Friday evenings. You need your Faculty ID card. I have no idea how a journalist would prove their employment.
I would be joining just as a regular citizen. I’m not a teacher or journalist, but there is a way to join as a patron. It’s not outrageously expensive and I generally go to Paris at least once a year so by time my trips, right it would probably be worth it.
