EXPERIENCE: Booking a Hotel Room in Paris

As I have mentioned in another thread, I am booking a trip to Paris for September. At only 11 weeks ahead, this is LAST MINUTE planning for me! I am usually making plans about 11 months out and making reservations 9 months out. Also, September is a busy month in Paris. As expected, I had a hard time finding a room. The challenges were-- More than half of the hotels had no availability in September for a one week stay. I am traveling with my son and we will share a room, but we don't want the typical twin room in Paris where 2 twin mattresses are on one bed frame or only separated by 2 inches. I found an adorable apartment thru Cobblestone, but there was no air conditioning. I made the mistake once of not booking air conditioning in May and we didn't sleep, either too hot or too noisy (windows open). And of course the prices were shockingly high.

After I adjusted my thinking to the higher prices, I found a room with 2 beds (across the room from each other in 20 m2) with an excellent location next to the Jardin du Luxembourg. However, reviews mentioned that their elevator was being refurbished and patrons were having to walk up as many as 6 flights of stairs. Apparently they had a service elevator as well, but it was nearly impossible to catch a ride due to staff using it for cleaning carts. So...I emailed the hotel to see if the above room was available on a lower floor or if perhaps the refurbishing would be complete by Septembre. I received a prompt reply with the information that the elevator refurbishment will be complete (fingers crossed). Also, the room rate was 400 Euros less than what was online. I have confirmed the lower rate and she is in the process of sending me a link to guarantee with a credit card. That extra money will cover two nice meals!

I am starting my packing list! For the first time, I will be checking a bag. We are taking an extra carry-on size suitcase as we are going to spend time at marche aux puces (flea markets). I have developed a small obsession for antique French tableware.
