Eurostar Purchase Experience

Wanted to share a recent purchase experience for the Eurostar train direct from London to Avignon:

When I looked at the Eurostar site last weekend, the 7:15 am departure from London said their were "9 tickets left at this price" for the Standard Premier seats to Avignon. I decided to bite and paid for four seats.

Today, the price on the Standard Premier seats has dropped by 11 pounds per seat and there's no more alert on the seat capacity. I'm guessing they added a car to the train, but have no idea.

It's not a big deal, but annoying. If they can add capacity, why bother to mention the number of seats left?

Still very excited for the train ride . . . .

Strange. FYI, they can't "add a car to the train", the trains are fixed formation. Bolted together at the factory/depot with an engine at each end and fixed since then. It takes a crane to separate them.

I hope you enjoy your trip. Brings extra drinks with you, no limits!
I enjoy watching how the landscape and flora slowly changes. Instead of being sudden when you fly, it is gradual. From the green fields of England via to the vineyards and Van Gogh yellows of Provence. You don't notice it for a long time, then you realise it has changed.

My experience is that the Eurostar is capacity pricing similar to US airlines. Technology is such that you just do not and subtract cars on high speed trains.

That's interesting to hear, thank you. I wonder if they had a group cancellation? In any event, Chris F., I loved your description of the ride:

Now, I'm even more excited for the train! Thanks again.

Even though the Eurostar trainsets are not like ordinary passenger trains, the individual cars (carriages) can be removed and replaced if need be. If for example, a coach develops a mechanical problem, it can be removed from the trainset and replaced with another car. As far as adding an additional passenger coach to increase capacity, it can also be done, although as a matter of policy it probably happens very rarely.
I'm a retired railroad conductor, and have worked on trainsets very much like the equipment used on Eurostar.

It is not as simple as uncoupling a carriage and rolling it away and then adding or replacing another. The carriages don't have their own wheels. Two carriages share a bogie (called a truck in some places) at each end. To remove a carriage it would have to lifted off the bogies by two cranes and put on a long lowloader. That would take hours. Adding an extra one is never done unless the entire fleet was to be reconfigured.

Spare carriages aren't kept around. The trainset is designed to remain whole for the duration of its life.

We have ridden the Eurostar 6 or more times. Lovely ride. They serve delicious food and wine for free. We were traveling on a Standard Premier ticket. The 2.5 hours just go by so fast.
