Eurostar from Avignon to London

Has anyone taken the Eurostar from Avignon Centre to London St Panscras Int’l? Thinking of trying this in order to keep travel as simple as possible. Any words of wisdom from the forum? Also, looking for hotel recommendations if you have any favorites other than what Rick mentions in his book. Thanks!

I don't believe Eurostar has any trains from Avignon. You would need to take an SNCF train to Lille to connect to the Eurostar to London.

It's the same OP in both threads Nigel…

Why not continue in the existing thread instead of starting a new one? But as I wrote in your previous thread, the South of France Eurostars are not running this year. They have been cancelled due to the pandemic and brexit. So you need to change, preferably in Lille but Paris will also work.

Badger. According to sources there are less Eurostar trains running because passport processing is taking so long, and less Brits are travelling.

I think the Avignon trains were always a bit of an underused stunt, anyway.

Definitely change in Lille if you can, rather than having to use the Metro/RER between the Gare de Lyon and Gare du Nord in Paris.

Thank you all for your suggestions (sorry, I accidentally started a new thread because I haven’t been on the forum for a while and forgot how to comment on my previous thread). That said, I have found a SNCF train from Avignon Centre, changing at Avignon TGV and then onto Paris Gare De Lyon. I was then going to book a Eurostar from Paris Gare De Lyon to London St Pancras Int’l. Does that sound right? My major concern is that we should be able to de-train from the SNCF train in the same station as we pick up the Eurostar (that being Paris Gare De Lyon). Thanks for all your help and patience.

Eurostar leaves from Gare du Nord, not Gare de Lyon.

Susan, thank you for your comment about Eurostar leaving from Gare du Nord but on the Eurostar website they have the train to London direct from Paris de Lyon as well. Could it be possible they leave from both stations?

Unfortunately that is not possible. You will detrain at Gare de Lyon and then need to travel to Gare du Nord to get the Eurostar. You can take the Metro if you have minimal luggage, or take a taxi.

I was just on the Eurostar website. They specifically state:" Where does the Eurostar leave from in Paris?

We have direct routes to London from Paris Gare du Nord and passengers have a choice from up to 10 trains a day."

I have done this (TGV and Eurostar) and from memory booked through Trainline.com (it was a while ago...).

I left Avignon TGV around midday and connected in Lille (Lille Europe) with the Eurostar. The TGV was delayed leaving Avignon and arriving into Lille, but Eurostar was held so that we would successfully connect - which I don't know if this is normal, but it was useful.

Connecting in Lille avoided having to change stations in Paris.

It took around 6 hours, and I would absolutely do this again as an alternative to flying.

The Eurostar does indeed only depart Gare du Nord. There are some departures from Marne-la-Vallée, but that will not really help you.

If you arrive Paris at the Gare de Lyon, you can take the RER A to Châtelet, walk across the platform to the RER B and take it to Gare du Nord. It takes about 10 minutes, and one ticket t+ at 2.10€ per person.

Doesn't the RER D cross from Gate de Lyon to Gare du Nord with no stops?.

No matter, changing on the RER in Paris means escalators way deep down, buying a ticket at a machine, turnstiles. A hassle.

Just take the TGV from Avignon to Lille and change to the Eurostar there as so many have suggested.
