Hello all,
Spending a week in Paris May 12-18 and wondering if we should have Euros with us or plan on using credit cards? Wondering if the local small businesses appreciate euros?
Thank you so much!
When I was in Paris in the fall of 2023, I used credit cards most places. The two places where I used cash were:
1) Paris Walks (I don’t know if they take cards; everyone on my walk paid in cash)
2) some small purchases at outdoor market; some vendors had a 10 EUR minimum for card
Agree with Laura, and while I still find retailers that won't take a credit card for purchases under 10 euros, I also find retailers that only take credit cards--this is cropping up in many cities/places.
There are ATMs everywhere in Paris. I wouldn't get cash in advance.
Same advice as most places, have a few euro on you as backup, but Card, especially tap, will likely be all you need.
For my last few trips to Paris including October 2024, I used Apple Pay for everything including the bathrooms at the train stations and small gelato purchases. Since Covid I’ve not run into any stores who won’t take ApplePay for small amounts. I do have a small amount of cash left from previous trips but the only time I used it was to break some bigger bills to leave a tip for housekeeping at my hotel.
I also was on a small group tour for part of my month in France and wound up eating dinner with others so used more cash than normal in instances where it was difficult to split the bill but that was an anomaly.
The recent power grid issue in Spain/Portugal made me realize I probably need about 50E (random number!) cash for emergencies, though.
If you want to visit and use the recently restored art deco toilets under the Madeleine church, you’ll need euros. The attendant makes change, which was handy because it gave me change to leave the hotel maid.
