Euros for Paris

Hi! I’m traveling from US to Paris. Seeking advice on the best/ less fees way to obtain euros? The bank that my American bank is associated with is BNP Paribus. Are there any of this Paris bank ATMs inCDG airport? Will I easily find these ATMs inParis? My fee would be only 3% and current conversion rate at these atms. Thankyou for information!

According to Google there are BNP Paribas banks all over Paris, but I am not sure if there are any in CDG. I always arrive in Terminal 2 so I hit the HSBC ATM in the center of Terminal 2 above the train station and any French Bank ATM in the city if and when I need more Euros.

Many people get Euros from an ATM upon arrival, and it is the least expensive way to get local currency. On the other hand, many think it is better to have some Euros in hand before arrival. Far be it for me to tell you what to do, but consider this. If you wait until arrival to get Euros, there is the inconvenience of having to find a machine, waiting to access it, the stress of hoping it works (they do occasionally malfunction and / or run out of currancy), and doing all that while somewhat jet lagged. For those reasons many get two or three hundred Euros beforehand from their local bank. It will cost a little more, but the amount it cost to have money in hand when arriving is money well spent, and the cost (relative to the overall cost of the trip) is next to nothing.

No matter what you do, be sure to notify your bank and credit card companies that you will be traveling. Otherwise they may see a foreign transaction, suspect fraud, and shut down access to your credit and ATM cards.

There are plenty of ATMs everywhere all around the world. Oodles in Paris, and loads at the airport.

3% is more than you need to pay. There are plenty of banks and credit unions that don't charge you anything to withdraw money from your own account at international ATMs (in fact, even these "no cost" ATMs typically do the exchange through Visa, and Visa charges a flat 1% for that, but the Visa interchange fee is not typically called out, so look for a "zero percent" option, it'll actually be 1%).

Never rely on a single piece of plastic to keep you alive far from home. Bring (at minimum) two credit cards (pointing to two different accounts/financial institutions) and two ATM cards (same criteria), just in case one gets suspended, lost, stolen or otherwise becomes unusable. Cards are not heavy or bulky, and can save your bacon when things go sideways.

Seeing that you will pay a moderate premium to use cash; check your credit cards, hopefully one charges no Foreign Transaction fees and happens to have contactless capability (would have a wi-fi looking symbol on it). If so, use that every chance you get, even for small purchases. Since the pandemic started, contactless has been widely accepted. If you play your cards right, you probably will not need more than 100 euro cash.
