Euro Cup

We have a planned trip next summer that includes 3 days in Paris and 2 in Bordeaux to see a Euro Cup game. Am I right in thinking that the beefed up security will make it totally safe?

While I'm sure the French authorities will be on red alert during the tournament, there are no guarantees in life. I'am planning to attend the tournament, I can think of no better country in Europe prepared for terrorists acts than France.

Not sure why I said totally safe! Just wanted to hear others like yourself that were committed to still going like we are!

Totally safe? There's no way any government can make that promise, who knows what the world will be like in 6-8 months, ISIS (or any other terrorist group) could be strong or have been destroyed into oblivion. Being that this is a huge event it would be safe to think that they will have security measures in place similar to what done during the World Cup and Olympics, plenty of time to plan and organize.

Good to hear! I've been to a bunch of Euro tourneys over the years, and they comprise some of my best travel experiences. Great fun party atmosphere.

My educated guess is that you will be safe however not totally safe which you are nowhere.

Need to define totally safe. You do know that the drive to and from your local airport is the most risky behavior that you will engage in during your trip.

I edited my original post away from "totally safe." Snarkiness wasn't helpful

No.

I saw no nastiness or as you call it snarkiness (I assume that's what you mean).

It is a fact that you are far more in danger at home just pursuing your day to day activities.

Any bunch of loonies can strike anywhere. I know this from being under siege from the IRA and later Al-Qaeda.

As I have heard previously, terrorists only have to get lucky once; defenders have to get it right every time.

While Europe and France are extremely safe, nobody can ever make it totally safe.

Jon - I am so jealous that you will get to see matches in France. One of the best experiences my wife and I had was when England hosted the 1996 matches and we saw three of them. You will love the atmosphere. Despite all the current security issues, I feel confident that measures will be in place to ensure safety for everyone. Enjoy!

I agree with the previous comment that Euro 1996 was a great experience. The last time England had a decent team although I still have vivid memories of the despair at Wembley after the Germans sneaked past England on penalties at Wembley.

As to the original question, no-one can answer as to the issue of safety during Euro 2016.
If the suicide bombers had made it into the Stade de France it is difficult to imagine next summer's tournament going ahead. Events over next few weeks or months will decide if the football goes ahead although I think the draw is scheduled to go ahead quite soon. I would keep this all in mind during your planning.
