They are accepted, but you must buy reservations and hope that the trains you want have not exceeded their Eurail pass quota.

Thank you, Sam. I already know the trains we need to catch, how can I check whether it's exceeded or not?

Thanks again, Sam. How do we make reservations? Is there a central website to do it or I have to go through individual country's rail provider? Sorry Sam for flooding you with questions, really appreciated your advice though. BTW, we are from Australia, I suppose some of the deals offered on RS website only applicable to American and Canadian?

There are some really good inexpensive tickets on TGVs available to people who book well in advance. Reservations are included if you are not a pass holder.

Can we assume that you already have bought those Select passes? If so, you have to still plan ahead and buy (not free by any chalk) the reservations.

Can you share where else you may use your Select Pass? You don't have enough trips here to make it worth while.

Thanks Nigel. No I haven't bought the pass yet, we'll be travelling between late June to the whole month of July to Italy, France, Switzerland and Austria. We're a family of 2 adults + a 9 yo which could qualify for the Family Pass, but our 13yo child would have to buy a Youth Pass. All the possible train rides that we will definitely take (at least 4 TGVs in France, 2 high speed in Italy and Railjet from Salzburg to Zurich, no other Swiss trains counted yet) already add up to almost a eurail family + youth. But most of these rides require reservations, TGVs particularly are expensive.

Hi,

Is the Eurail Select Pass for 1st class or 2nd class? If it should happen that the day and time of departure you want has already met its Pass quota, say in 1st class, no big deal yet. Ask about 2nd class to see if you can be accommodated, or vice versa depending on which class is your first choice. That's one advantage having a 1st class Pass. In my experience I've run into this tedious Pass quota a few times, just one's luck but then I only traveled in the summer when I had a Select Pass. Luckily, changing the class reservation on the TGV did the trick, never the dep time, let alone the day of dep.

A Select pass for 3 or 4 countries will automatically be in 1st class for adults and free kids, so of course we'd choose that class for the youth, also, and I think the booking engines are getting better at organizing that. If you're booking through Eurail.com or raileurope-world for pass delivery to Australia, then either site should be able to process TGV seat reservations for you. You didn't mention a TGV between France and Switzerland, which is good since those happens to be the most expensive type of TGV reservation. Even if space is available in both classes, people with 1st class passes are also welcome to reserve in 2nd to save on this reservation fee.

Exactly, when I had a 3 country 1st class Select Pass which also listed France, I reserved in 2nd class to save on the reservation and definitely those times when I was told the 1st class quota was filled.

Thank you all, in the end, I decided not to use Eurail pass as most our expensive kind of train rides will be on TGV trains in France and not only the cost of their reservation is high, the quota for Eurail pass holders creates unnecessary stress. From the maths I did using the very comprehensive guide RS compiled, money wise, the pass's only slightly better.
