Eiffel Tower: Walk to 2nd level, elevator to summit

I realize variants on my question have been asked -- and answered -- previously but my question has a slightly different angle than those I've reviewed in the forums, so I beg your patience. On an upcoming trip to Paris during the last week of March, 2016, our plan is to tackle the Eiffel Tower as follows: (1) queue up for tickets to the stairs @ the south leg, (2) walk -- taking our time -- to the 2nd level and, finally, (3) take the elevator from the 2nd floor to the summit. Here are my questions:

(1) some information online suggests buying the "supplemental" elevator ticket from the 2nd level to the summit on the ground because there can be problems buying it on the 2nd level. Is this true? And, if so, is the line to buy the "supplemental" lift ticket on the ground different than the line to buy the stairs ticket? In other words, would we need to wait in two (2) different lines on the ground?

(2) once we've reached the summit -- weather permitting -- is there a cost/separate ticket to take the lift all the way back to the ground or is the ride down "free?"

(3) finally, is this the best plan or would it make more sense to buy tickets online straight to the summit and then walk down from the second level on our return? Which is the better way to see the Eiffel Tower?

Thanks, in advance, for any insight/suggestions. This will be a once-in-a-lifetime for the 2 friends we are taking with us and we want it to be the best experience it can be for them. By the way, we are all reasonably fit, so walking the steps should not present any problem.

I'll try to answer you question, from my experience last week. We had previously bought online passes to the summit.

The first elevator takes you from the ground to the 2nd level. You exit & immediately go to the line for the summit. Guides are there to direct you. Go to the outside rail & follow clockwise.

There's about a 15-20 min queue before you board the elevator to the top. Need to show your tix. Once there, stay as long as you like.

Then take the elevator (no fee) down to the 2nd level. From there, take a different elevator down to the 1st or ground levels. Not a very long wait for either elevator.

The top is the best view, IMO. But weather can change that. (So can selfie-sticks.)

If you can get online tix, do so. The line to purchase tickets was very long every time we strolled through the Eiffel Tower. But at 100 PM, we walked through security to the first elevator. (It was a weekday.) The pre-purchased tix line can be somewhat long as well in the security area, depending on when you arrive.

Bon Chance!

To Juan M.:

Thank you for your information. I tried to be clear and complete (at the expense of being succinct), so maybe I wasn't as clear as I hoped.

Our plan (plan A) is to walk up to the second level. Now I know from there we need to take the lift to the summit. My first question is (1) should I buy tickets for the lift from the 2nd level to the summit on the 2nd level or should I buy them on the ground before beginning our walk up. If the prevailing wisdom is that I should buy lift tickets from the 2nd level to the summit on the ground, is that a separate line from the line to purchase walk-up tickets? In other words, would I have to stand in 2 lines?

My last question is whether it would be better to (1) walk up to the 2nd level and take the elevator up from there to the summit, riding the elevator(s) all the way back to the ground or (2) buy a time-reserved ticket all the way to the top and then ride the elevator down only to the 2nd level, walking the rest of the way to the ground? Option (2) commits us to the cost and a set time even if the weather is bad while option (1) seems to leave us more flexible.

Clearer?

I believe the ticket window for the stairs does not sell tickets to the top. You walk up and then buy a second ticket to go to the top, or just enjoy the middle levels and walk back down.

If you go to the top or not, the ride down is free. You do change elevators in the middle and can stop and walk around there before taking the elevator or the stairs down.

The stairs are the best way to go for a flexible schedule. Pre purchase is ideal for beating the line but at the risk of less than ideal weather.
