Eiffel Tower visit 5 or 8 pm?

I'm visiting Paris in late September (for my 4th time) and have been to the top of the ET during the day so I'd like to visit at sunset and seen the lights of Paris sparkle at night. Tickets are available for 1700 or 2000 (5pm or 8pm) but nothing in between. Sunset in September is at 8:20pm. If I get the 1700 ticket, would I find myself wishing I didn't have so much time to kill before it gets dark (since I mainly want to see Paris at night) or does waiting to get to the top take a good chunk of time so that I'll be glad to have the earlier ticket? Thanks in advance.

If you have time to spend wandering around the first platform, taking photos before it gets dark, go ahead.
But if you're really interested in seeing Paris after dark, I'd suggest the 20h00 ticket. It won't take you long to go up, since you have a timed ticket.

We have done it day and night and last time at night in the rain:

I prefer the views at night and would definitely book as late as possible. With a ticket, the wait is minimal. No way I would want to linger for 3.5 hours waiting for sunset.

With the 8 p.m. ticket, you'll at least be on the second level during the sunset waiting to go up to the top, which is where we were when we did the "sunset tour" in May last year. It's still worth seeing at that time, even if you're still waiting to get to the summit -- beautiful lights from the sunset over the city.

Thanks for the feedback! I'm going to get the 8 pm ticket.
