Eiffel Tower tickets - will they let you in earlier than your time?

I was thrilled to snag tickets last night for my family of 5 to go up in the Eiffel Tower. I was up late to get them and they all sold out within minutes.

I had originally hoped to get 8:00pm tickets so that we could watch the sunset but got an error message that I had too large of a group for that time so I went with the next time which was 9:30pm. The sun should be set by then. The only time before the 8pm one was 5pm and that was earlier than I wanted to go.

I am wondering if they ever let people that have tickets go up earlier than their posted time? If so, we may try to do that.

If they definitely don't then I may get a 2nd set of tickets for the 2nd stage on a different day when it is daylight so we can still see the view before it gets dark.

Anyone have experience with this?

Thanks in advance!

I really don't think so. When we went we had a 10:00pm time and they definitely were checking the tickets to make sure that you were lined up at your appropriate time. Just to note that the night view FROM the Eiffel Tower is impressive, but not as impressive as the night view from one of the other buildings that INCLUDES the Eiffel Tower. So something to think about.

You may see the sunset after all, depending on when you are going. This is a link from another posting here at the forum that gives sunset times (along with a lot of other data) for Paris. Scroll to the bottom to find your month and date for the right time.

Consider walking up the stairs earlier than your time or on a different day. It's 700 steps. I'm thinking it takes 15-20 minutes and you can rest on Level 1. My 4 1/2 year old did it twice in one trip and insists on doing it each trip now. It will be 5€ each, kids may be cheaper. There is another line for the ride to the top on Level 2. I don't know if the ticket times matter at that point because you can, in theory, take as long as you like to get in the second line for the elevator to the top and the line can be as long as an hour. The sunset view will be great from Level 2, so don't get in line for the top and miss the sunset! Walking down from Level 2 is also an option if the elevator lines are too long.

It would also be pretty spectacular to be on the tower on the hour after dark for the "sparklings". It happens for ten minutes. Starting times are on the website. It's thousands of strobe lights so if these bother you, get to Trocadero, a bridge or Champs de Mars to observe from a distance.

If you have kids, there are two playgrounds in the vicinity. One for little kids is tucked around from the South Piller; the other is further away closer to l'École Militaire. The latter is newer and more extensive. There was also a hand-cranked manège [carousel], a pedal car track, concession and washrooms nearby in 2012. I wouldn't use the washrooms after dark, even if open. Bring toilet paper and hand sanitizer. Near the river on both sides are 2 fancy, double decker manèges with music. On the way to and from Trocadero is another playground tucked away with a fort. All of these are located on the western side. The playgrounds which come with age ranges written on them were the best antidote to "I'm tired." That and crèpes. Nutella and banana crèpes, if at DefCon 3.

I guess I just don't see the point of trying so hard to get tickets in advance to go up for the sunset time. For one thing, you don't know if you'll even be able to see a sunset on the day you have tickets for (could be rainy, could be cloudy, or you could be lucky, who knows). For another thing, the sunset is just as beautiful from any high place in Paris - Montparnasse tower, Arc d'Triomphe, etc. doesn't necessarily have to be seen from the ET. Also, if you miss the actually sun setting you will still be able to have a good view of Paris for another 45 mins or so before it gets too dark to enjoy it. Going up a little after sunset means you don't have to stay around so long up there waiting for the lights of Paris to come on - the night view is more spectacular than the sunset view in my opinion, you can see a sunset anywhere but you can only see the lights of Paris in Paris.

Another idea regarding ET at/near sunset is to see it from the Seine (via a river cruise). We like to visit the Tower during the day when the outward views are more clear, then have it be part of the experience when day changes to night. Magnifique!

Thanks, everyone. It may be overkill but I ended up getting 2 sets of tickets. So we will go back on our last evening at 5pm to the 2nd stage only.
