Eiffel Tower question - getting to top

I know that it's best to get reservations 90 days out but the family wants to do a behind the scenes tour. The one we're considering ends on the 2nd level. We would like to go to the top though - not sure if we shou skip the tour and just purchase tickets to the top or if we can purchase tickets from the 2nd level to the top that say on the 2nd level. I haven't read anything definite that says we can do that. We will be there the last week of July and quite possibly will do this the day the Tour de France ends.

Suggestions? Comments?
Thanks!

Having done this way too many times, i can assure you, you can buy tickets to the top when you are on the second level. 6 euros.

I think what woinparis might be talking about is the narrow little staircase from the 3rd floor with just a few steps that plops you out on the very topmost crowded observation deck. Maybe.

Thanks for clarifying. For all of my reading I wasn't certain especially since it's so highly recommended to buy advance tickets.

Then most likely we will do the tour which finishes at the 2nd level and then buy tickets to the 3rd. Merci beacoup everyone.

You must have tickets to go from level 2 to the top there is ticket check and lines for the elevator. You can buy these tickets on level two.
