Eiffel tower - again :)

From the posts I read through, I couldn't quite find the answer. If you get a ticket to the summit for sunset, are you allowed to wander around the second level at all before you head to the summit? Also, how long to allow for getting up if sunset is at 9:22? Not sure if I should be picking the 8:00, 9:00 or 10:00 options

Kylazak,
Yes, you can wander around the second level, as long as you desire, before taking the elevator to the summit.

In terms of what time to choose for your tickets, I'd suggest the 8:00 PM option because it will take time to get through security, then you may need to wait to get in the elevator, etc, etc...

After sunset, the tower will become illuminated and it will "twinkle" for 5-10 minutes on the hour.

Make sure you go to the Trocadéro (across the Seine) for best views (and photos) of the tower when it twinkles!

Enjoy your time in PAris!

As soon as you get to the second level you will need to change elevators to reach the summit. Take a look at the line for that elevator before you decide to wander around. We waited it in for about half an hour around 6:30 pm in late April of this year, then decided we were enjoying a great view on the second level and didn't need to go higher (mostly because I get antsy in long lines).

We had to wait at least 30 minutes on line at the 2nd level to get to the summit this May.
