Paris - Early August Hotel (Arrondissement/Quality) 2 Adults and 2 Adult Children (16/20yr)

Hello Everyone and thanks in advance for your expertise!

My family (husband/son 16/daughter 20) will be travelling to France, then Italy this summer. We plan to stay in Paris for four nights. I will get you all to chime in on our itinerary in the near future. But first we need to book our hotel. I have been scouring YouTube, Google and this forum. I think I have decided to avoid short term rentals (AirBnB/VRBO) as it seems too sketchy in Paris with laws etc. I have searched previous forums and I am looking for specific advice about weather you would recommend Aparhotels or regular hotel for our family/budget. I can share a brief list of what we plan to do. We plan to leave Toronto in the window of July 30-Aug 1. We need either a room that has beds for four or two rooms. Our budget is 250-300€ per room/per night. We are first timers so our wish list is (not firm): Louvre, Eiffel Tower (no ascent) , L’arc de Triomphe (ascend), Catacombs, Monmarte/Sacré-Cœur, Notre Dame, St. Chapelle, 1/2 day trip to Versailles and a day trip to Normandy and perhaps a Seine River Cruise. I spoke to one travel agent who said to consider: Hotel Gaston (17th) seems far, Hotel Atmospheres (5th) Latin quarter?- friends told us to consider Marais...I am so confused and conflicted. We enjoy good food, are able-bodied and open to suggestions - Metro access is important - I am sure there are other areas to consider (South Pigalle, Batignolles, Belleville) they seem far to me though. We will fly to Florence on our last day in Paris.

The good news for you is that you traveling in August when hotel rooms in Paris are generally lower priced than than other times during the year. That being said, two rooms for 300€ per night is going to be tough to find in the lower numbered arrondissements. Now if you mean 250€ to 300€ per room per night, take a look at Grand Hotel des Balcons which is centrally located and was recently mentioned in an article in the Washington Post in which the writer looked at horel rooms at various price points. The write up in the Post is pretty spot on for this hotel: https://www.washingtonpost.com/travel/tips/best-budget-paris-hotels/. Hotel Caron le Marais is a very good hotel in Le Marais at about the same price point as Grand Hotel de Balcons. I suggest putting your dates and your budget into Booking.com to see what you will get. Four adults in a quad room in Paris is not a good idea, IMO -- one bathroom and limited space are the reasons for that. Paris is relatively compact with great transit options and while I generally suggest that first time vistors stay in Le Marais, the Latin Quarter or Saint Germain because of how central they are, the budget might not support that. My first trip to Paris with a large group, I stayed near Charles Michel metro stop in the 15th arrondissement because that is what the budget allowed. It was fine. We took the metro to the sights and budgeted that time into our day.

In August you definitely need a hotel with AC. I’d probably go with 2 rooms if you can split girls and guys. 4 adult sized people in a small Paris hotel room is going to be cramped.

If you stay 4 nights that just gives you 3 days for touring. I’d encourage you to defer the Normandy excursion for your next trip when you can spend 2 nights in Bayeux. People do do this as a day trip but after several visits to the area there is so much to see I’d recommend against this.

Also, to me Versailles takes at least 3/4 of a day. The inside of the palace is going to be hot and miserable in August. Unless someone has strong feelings about this I’d spend my time in Paris.

Your sights in Paris will take your 3 days without any day trips. Your first afternoon may be low energy with jet lag and travel fatigue. But if you are just going to view the ET from the outside then that’s a good place to head after you drop your bags.

I’d go for closer in than the 17th. Has the travel agent you've talked with visited Paris? I’ve not stayed at Hotel Atmospheres but have seen it recommended. The 5th is going to be more convenient for you.

What a fun trip!

Oh per room, per night, that's great. Then you have lots of options and should have no problem finding two rooms with AC in August. I suggest looking in the central areas. Here are some suggestions of hotels that I have found to be excellent and well located that should be under 300€ per room per night in August:

https://www.hotelcaron.com/en/

2 rooms will give you 2 bathrooms. Be sure to book a place with air conditioning.

For a first visit I like to be within a 15-25 minute walk of the Seine.

Some hotels in your budget

  • Bonsoir Madame, 6e
  • Hotel Signature Saint Germain, 6e
  • Hotel Monge, 5e

If you don't mind a sofa bed and a queen that separates into two twins (junior suite) at $415 per night OR Superior Double/Twin Rooms (king bed or twins) at $268 per room/night, there is Hôtel Résidence des Arts located in the 6th. It has AC and a great location. I plugged in August 1-August 5.

There's a lot of useful hotel info here. If possible, could you please add Paris to your title? That would help your post show up if others also search for Paris hotels. Thanks so much, and have a wonderful family trip!

Melissa9,
I concur with Pam about day trips from Paris with only three real sightseeing days. You just don't have enough time to go to see the DDay beaches and Versailles and still see just some of the many things in Paris that you mention. (e.g. Paris to Bayeux, for the Normandy DDay beaches, is 263 Km and over 2 hours by train. Add in getting to the station, etc., and your day will be mostly travel, rather than sightseeing.)

The Seine cruises within Paris are mostly just one hour, and I highly recommend taking a ride on the Vedettes du Pont Neuf boats. They leave from and return to the tip of the Ile de la Cite, are narrated by a real person (not a recording), are inexpensive, and are a nice way to see the sights from the river after dark, when the Eiffel Tower and other buildings are lit up. (Get there a bit ahead of time to snag seats on the tip deck for the best views.) They are also, IMO less packed with people than Bateaux Mouches.

I don't know about hotels as we always stay with family just outside Paris, but posters on this forum have some excellent suggestions. Check out their ideas and I am sure you will find something that suits you.

Amusez-vous bien!

10 years ago, when we took our kids at that age we stayed on Ile St Louis, which couldn't be more in the center of Paris and kind of unique experience. We rented an apartment through an agency but things have changed so much and there are much more lengthier stays required. Agree to not do an Airbnb. But there are hotels like Hotel des Deux that meet your budget requirement. Not sure if it has A/C. Also the Marais is great and our preferred neighborhood is St Germain.

I personally wouldn't do Normandy as a day trip. Four nights in Paris just scratches the surface of Paris. We just went and stayed 6 nights in the Normandy region.

Versailles is crowded and hot and our least favorite tourist attraction and will be more than half a day.

Love everything else about Paris. Get your tickets in advance for Musee d' Orangerie and the 5th floor of the d'Orsay which are my favorite museums. Also your family might enjoy a cooking class or food tour...you are in Paris!
