Is dunkirk a worthwhile place to spend time. How much time is necessary?
about 5 minutes. Maybe less.
I drive past frequently. Never found anything of interest there.
If the previous poster had got out of his car, he might have found the great Musee Dunkerque 1940 which is excellent about Op Dynamo and worth a couple of hours.
Thanks, Gally. We will visit the Normandy D-Day beaches this summer and Dunkirk the next.
Heaving interest in Operation Dynamo you can visit the mentioned museum and I liked the Port Dunkirk Harbour Museum (Musée Portuaire de Dunkerque) as I wanted to know more about the place it’s maritime history. Otherwise 5 minutes is very long there........ :)
I was doing a self guided tour of the lighthouses of Northern France and stopped in Dunkirk to see the lighthouse and harbor and then popped into the pharmacy for some bandaids, so I guess I spent about an hour there.
Whose definition of worthwhile?
I spent a whole lovely September day on a day trip from Paris. The tourist season was over, the beach was quiet, the Flemish beach front architecture was fascinatingly frivolous, there were multitudinous examples of French Art Deco and its evolution into what is generally known as International Style. A busy port, excellent French Fries, lively city scene and a whole troop of pipers in kilts. Who could ask for more?
