drop off point for car rental

We are taking the train from Paris to Caen, France on a Thursday the end of October. We will rent a car from the train station in Caen and be touring Normandy Friday and driving to Giverney later in the day Friday to stay the night there. Saturday we are touring the Monet Gardens and then driving back to Paris CDG to fly out very early Sunday morning. (Our hotel is next to the airport.) Where would the best place be to drop off our car on Saturday evening? The airport? We would be coming into Paris after 6 pm on Saturday. I hear the airport area traffic is a mess, but we would be coming in on a weekend day, so rush hour traffic may not be as bad? Would it be better to drop off the car on the outer perimeter of Paris and take a train or cab to the airport?

If literally at the airport then yes drop it off the night before. Otherwise if in Roissy, it's probably easier to just keep it overnight. I wouldn't worry about dropping anywhere in Paris, that's more hassle than you gain. Just stay on the highways circling the city. I've never seen really bad Paris traffic, but maybe just been lucky.

I agree with Tom, just drive to your CDG hotel, drop off your bags there, and return the car at the airport. You can take the tram or a shuttle back to the hotel. Yes, the roads around CDG are busy, like those around any major airport, but so are all the roads near Paris.
