Driving Paris to Mont Michel??

In August, my son and I will be driving from Versailles to Mont Michel, then taking a few days to tour back via the Normandy beaches and Bayeaux. The fastest drive is to the north - the same route we will take on our return. The shortest (but 45-60 minutes slower) route is directly west via smaller roads. Would the direct route take us through worthwhile countryside and villages or would we be better off with a bit more time at Versailles and then minimize drive time to Mont Michel that afternoon? Thanks!

You mean taken the N12 to Alençon and further. I drive a lot along national roads in France and after while it can be an annoying experience to my opinion especially if there is nothing that is really worth to see. I suggest you take the A11 to Chartres and Le Mans, the first for the cathedral and the latter has a stunning historic centre and the famous race track. Further A81 to Rennes, but exit to Vitré and Fougères both nice places with huge medieval castles.
