Driving ourselves to Mont St Michel for late afternoon visit

We are staying in Bayeux for a week.

On Saturday, we plan to go to the Bayeux market, pick up picnic items, and leisurely drive to Mont St Michel, stopping to picnic along the way. Hoping to arrive mid afternoon to the parking lot, and then head across for an afternoon and early evening visit.

We would leave the abbey and then make our way back to Bayeux, with a stop for dinner somewhere along the way.

Does this sound reasonable? Any issues with this plan? Any recommendations on how to do it better?

We are in Bayeux and went to MSM today, using the Bayeux Shuttle to get there. I think your idea sounds lovely and I see no issues with it. The route was pretty straightforward (and the scenery beautiful). There is a park a very short walk from the parking lot (just follow all the people heading to MSM) that would be a great spot for a picnic.

How much time are you giving yourself on MSM? Sunset is wonderful, but may be too late for the drive home and dinner on the way. You also get a somewhat different feel later in the day once all the tour gourps have left and the town becomes quieter.

A picnic suggestion is the Jardin des Plantes d'Avranches. This is adjcent to the Église Notre-Dame-des-Champs in Avaranches. Has a great view of MSM.
