Driving Nice - Lourdes - Paris

Hi All,

I wonder how's the driving condition for route Nice - Lourdes - Paris? I see a lot of roadworks from gmaps. It will be during NYE time 31st Dec - 2nd of January
1. If i'd like to stopover midway which is the best place to be? I could only have 1 place to stopover
Candidates for Nice - Lourdes' stopover are Montpellier (is it gritty/unsafe as Marseilles?) ; Carcassonne ; Toulouse or Albi. I need a place that's not all closed during NYE time

Candidate for Lourdes - Paris' stopover doesn't seem much and am worried with the timing since it's going to be around 31st Dec - 1st Jan. I'm thinking of Dordogne, Sarlat la Caneda. Sarlat la Caneda looks quite a village, I'm afraid everything is closed by during NYE.

  1. Is it possible to drop off car during the NYE period ie. 1st-2nd of January? Is there anyone with bad experience dropping off the car without direct inspection from the rental staff?

TIA

You might also check on flying from Lourdes to Paris – unless you really want the experience of winter driving in France. When I visited in the late spring, there was still significant snow on the mountains around Lourdes and the weather was quite cool.

I've been to Lourdes in the fall and spring, and both Ryan Air and Air France did the flight. As I remember, it was a little over an hour. To get from Lourdes to the airport, there's a bus, although I took a taxi – not too expensive. Ryan air can be a little chaotic, but it's fine if you follow the rules carefully. The one time I took Air France, a one-way ticket was really expensive, but I bought a cheaper round-trip ticket and simply didn't use the return direction.

Hi Sherry

thanks for the recommendation. I think that'd be a good idea to take the flight. We plan to drive from Cote de Azur to Lourdes. So we need to figure out if there's any drop off rental car office in Lourdes.
The snow is our worries too and we don't really know the Lourdes - Paris route is mountainous or not.

I check the flights and there are 2 airlines which are HOP and AirFrance (I think HOP is also part of AF). I haven't checked RyanAir. May I know what caused the chaotic condition as we would be flying during NYE period which could cause chaotic situation too?

Edit: I've checked RyanAir but they only fly from Lourdes to Milan and London. Perhaps they've changed their route >_<
