We will have a rental car and will be driving to Strasbourg from Colmar. What is it like driving in to get the the old town area?
Is it city like? We drove in Munich last summer, we did it, but found it stressful.
We are trying to decide if we should go into Strasbourg for part of a day or visit somewhere else instead.
Thanks
It was about ten years ago, but we drove in no problem. Relatively small town, not a big city. As I recall, there are parking garages near the train station, which is easy walking distance to old town. Enjoy!
is it a French rental or one you got in Germany? Big difference, due to the large Crit'Air zone in Strasbourg
Hi all. Good info added by Nigel. I've rented cars and driven in many countries in Europe, but it's been a few years. Was aware of ZTL zones in Italy, but sounds like there are new rules / permits to be aware of in other countries. Here is part of a previous post by Nigel that gives a little more info:
"If you have a non-German registered car you need a green Umweltplakette sticker for being near the centres of many German cities and many towns. It goes on the windscreen. German rentals come with it.
If you have a non-French registered car you need a yellow Crit-Air sticker for being near or even reasonably near the centre of many French cities and towns. It goes on the windscreen. French rentals come with it."
Don't want to highjack this thread, so I started a new thread in the Transportation section asking where to find more info about this throughout Europe.
We had a Germany rented vehicle so based ourselves in Colmar and took the train to Strasbourg. We spent the better part of a day there. Even with the proper sticker I wouldn’t have tried to drive or park in the historic center. You can look up parking lots on Google maps.
The Green-Zones app displays emissions zones for most countries and cities. You can use the app to find out where along your trip route you’d need a sticker. In the Alsace area, Strasbourg is the only city where one is needed. Many more German towns require one.
Had a German car for the Christmas Markets and stayed in Colmar. Take the train. Lot easier with no stress. About 35 minutes.
Thank you for information about required stickers - I was not familiar with that. Will read the post started on the transportation section.
