For that stretch of road my advice is very simple.
Forget the GPS and keep your eyes on the road. I say this as somebody who drives with a GPS a LOT and who knows that road. It is a very direct route, but it is very very winding and narrow, with frequent cross roads.
In such circumstances it can be tempting to rely on the GPS at just the wrong moment. Follow the signs and keep your eyes on the road and your dashboard.
You seem to rely a lot on google maps. Have a brief look before you set out but put all electronics away and drive with your eyes.
Lots of people have run off that road over the years, or had head on collisions. Don't let it be you.
My wife and I use the Garmin app on our phone. She navigates and I drive. Getting lost can be fun, but it gets old after a while.
Hi Nigel,
thanks for the info. I'll forget about the gps for that part of the road and focus on the sign. now, i'm still not sure whether to start from Nice or Monaco before heading to La Turbie. Where does the sign for Grand Corniche start either from Nice or Monaco?
I have this tips from a website but it starts from Eze and I think i wouldn't visit Eze or i definitely have to pass it in order to reach La Turbie?
Here's the tip from the web:
'The Grand Corniche can be hard to find: keep an eye peeled for the small signs along the Moyenne Corniche around Èze'
Actually, where does the Grand Corniche start? according to the tip above, it seems like it starts after the Moyenne track.
Do all the Corniches a two way drive road?
ohh and the web also recommend the most spectacular view it claims
'From La Turbie, take the road to Monaco, but turn off at Les Hautes de Monte Carlo for the incredible views from the promontory by the France Telecom dome.'
is this true?
The overall thing to keep in mind when driving is, since you're a tourist you're probably going where all the other tourists are going. The signmakers know this and create their signs to accommodate you (most of the time). Add in a general sense of NSEW direction and unless you're going way, way off the beaten path, the beaten path will work for you.
Hi All,
just want to share my experience driving in the Grand Corniche last Dec. it was easy and stunning indeed. I input 'the Observatoire' on the GPS from Nice so as not to mistakenly drive down to Moyenne as at the sign from Nice is not so clear and once you miss the sign, you'd unconsciously taking the Moyenne instead of the Grand. From there it was easy , just keep sticking to the left / pay attention to the sign in every junctions. By that time, partial of the Grand was under reconstruction (not sure by now) right after the EZE Viewpoint until just before La Turbie. There would be a clear detour sign so no need to worry
