We pick up our car rental in Nice and drop it in Reims(the itinerary suggested by Rick Steves), then go to Pairs maybe by train. I wonder if an additional fee for one way rentals.

I've been researching a fall trip and surprised to find dropoff charges, which weren't a factor years ago. I think the extra cost was $160+ for a few days' rental, and it didn't matter whether the second city was near or far.
You may get a different number because your drive is much longer than mine, but the extra cost may still be worth it if you have enough time to "smell the roses" on the way. (Or taste the wines, as long as you either spit them out or spend the night in the same town.) Or, if time is short, why not just a TGV from Nice to Gare de Lyon?

I believe family travel by car is more happier than train travel.
