Driving from Lyon to the French border

Hi, we are from India and want to drive from Lyon to Rome. We have stops in Turin, Genoa and Florence. I understand that it's much cheaper to hire a car in Lyon and drop it off at the French border, cross it and then pick up another Vehicle in Italy. Any ideas?

Why don't you drop the car in Lyon, take the train to Turin, then rent a car when you arrive.

Thanks so much, was thinking of driving across the alps. Our journey starts in Lyon and then onto Turin, Genoa, Florence and then Rome. We are coming into Lyon from Paris by train

Well, you are kind of up against it aren't you. The Alps are the border between France and Italy.

Lyon, Turin, Genoa, Florence and Rome are all cities where you cannot drive. A car is a liability.
Are you planning to visit anywhere apart from these cities? If not, it is a lot easier, and faster, to travel city centre to city centre by train.

Have you allowed for tolls? Both France and Italy have tolls on autoroutes / autostrada.

The surcharge is for picking up a car in one country and returning it in a different country. There is no surcharge if you drive to Italy, and return to France to hand back the car.
