Driving from Lyon-Geneva

Hi all! We will be in Lyon Oct 9-12th and thought we would take a drive to Geneva. Does anyone have experience using the iPhone or even Google maps for GPS? Did it work okay or do we need to find another GPS system to navigate us? Anyone done this drive before? Thanks! -Taylor

I've used my iPhone as a GPS on the back roads of Portugal and it did a good job. It's also great for directions on foot when you have trouble finding that special restaurant. However, I also have a Garmin GPS with lifetime European map updates and I find this better than a smart phone. The one I have warns me about traffic cameras and using the POI mode to locate parking, gas or ATM's is an added benefit. If this is all the driving you intend to do in Europe for the next few years, I'd save money and use your smart phone. I'd also bring along a bracket so you can attach to windshield.

If you are using Google maps (yay) or Apple Maps (yukk) you will be using data - lots of data. Make sure you have a good data plan or you will have a big bill when you return.

To give you an idea how much data Google Maps takes, I sometimes use my iPhone for turn by turn directions here (wish I could change the voice, she grates on me) and I have calculated that a half hour journey at motorway or A road speeds takes me about 50 to 60 megabytes, so that's 100 to 120 Mb an hour.
