In September we will be driving from Chartres to Mont st Michel and would like to take the scenic route. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Our guided tours make a lunch stop at the charming town of Fougeres. www.viamichelin.com can also recommend driving routes for tourists or the paper versions of their maps mark scenic routes with a green line. On the Normandie map, anything marked in green takes you well off the main roads for your route.
One of my peaves on this site is people complaining they can't find info or train times for places because they have mis-spelt them. It is
Fougères
Those marks above letters are important, they are different letters. Laura, as an employee of this site I would have thought better of you.
(end rant)
The historic city centre of Le Mans is very nice and the race car museum at the entrance of the race track is to my opinion worth a visit, as well as Vitré south of Fougères.
In 2010 we did the reverse drive. From Mont St Michel we drove to Dinan, a beautiful medieval town, stopping at Cancale for the oysters, Pointe du Grouin for the scenery, St. Malo to see the walled city, and Dinard. From Dinan we drove to Vitre stopping at Fougeres on the way. Vitre was a good stopping point on the way to Chatres. LeMans was an option but we picked Vitre for the ancient castle and beautiful old church and architecture. We spent 2 nights in Dinan and one night each in MSM, Vitre, and Chartre. We started and ended in Paris. Upon leaving Paris we first stopped at Honfleur and Bayeux before MSM. Upon leaving Chatres we returned our car to the outskirts of Paris. Hope this is of some help.
