Driving from Bayeux to Geneva, Switzerland

I am planning on renting a car in Caen and driving to Bayeux, spending 2 days there touring the D-day sites then have a choice of returning the car back to Caen and catching the train to Montreux (via Geneva) or driving from Bayeux to Geneva then catching train to Montreux.

I have never driven in France but was thinking this would be a easy drive if I stay out of Paris.

What are the groups thoughts?

Thanks,
Steve

Renting a car in one country and returning it in another country typically incurs a very large drop-off fee. That would make the decision for me.

Sherry, et al, the recommendation to drop the car at the French side of Geneva airport was discussed in Steve's posts on this topic from June and July. That will get around a second-country fee.

yes, I understand that I can same some money by dropping it off in the french sector. I am still wondering if this is a good option and wanted some opinions on this. Are there tolls? and if so, about how much are we talking between Bayeux and Geneva?

France does have tolls on the autoroute. www.viamichelin.com will estimate the tolls for any given route, and/or help you find a route that avoids them.

Unless you are planning to be stopping here or there en route in Northern France to see some of the very worthwhile sites along the way , and only going from point A to point B , I would drop the car in Caen and go by train . The cost notwithstanding , the trip would be far more relaxing and enjoyable by letting the engine driver do the heavy lifting , if you catch my drift .
