Hello,
We are traveling (driving) from Amboise to Paris in April. We are looking for a place to stop for lunch and site see. Is Chartes the obvious choice? I was there 20 years ago, but only saw the cathedral. I"m not sure if there is old city center strolling... Other recommendations? We love history, small walkable old city centers, a touch of Roman history always appreciated. Thank you!
Chartres is a good place to choose. It is always worth seeing the cathedral again, especially as it has been 20 years since you saw it last. I hear that the main old part of the city, by the river, is well worth visiting altho I have not done so.
The historic centre of Le Mans is compact, very walkable and above all very beautiful. It's walls are dating back to the Roman period. Having enough time well to combine with Chartres.
Closer to Paris Fontainebleau has a pleasant vibe and famous for it's royal château. Think the gardens are free to walk around, not the palace.
