We are planning to hire a rental car in Nice where we are spending couple of nights before driving to Uzès. Is the drive pretty straightforward or is the terrain hilly or would you recommend hiring a car from another town closer to Uzès. I love to use public transportation but it seems that car is essential to visit all the small towns/villages in the area. We want to make day trips to see the lavender fields.
www.viamichelin.com will suggest a few route options, which may include more distance on the AutoRoute and more tolls, or may be mostly by smaller roads through more scenic areas. I think the benefit of a car is to choose the more scenic route and to stop along the way. Or, a direct TGV train from Nice to Avignon takes 3-4 hours.
If you drive be sure to hoard coins for the tolls beforehand.
